Let's think this through: As I understand it, hydraulic brakes in series with an accumulator use a fluid-filled line to compress the volume of space behind a diaphram. On the other side of that diaphram (in the accumulator) is an air-filled space, at high pressure by virtue of the proper operation of the accumulator, that amplifies the upstream push from your foot on the brake pedal.
If the diaphram leaks (slowly), compression of downstream parts would be compromised (obviously). More importantly, the brake fluid that used to push the diaphram forward would be entering the pressurized air chamber side. Liquids don't compress, and so the remaining gaseous space would be reduced in volume and therefore less efficient at translating force 'downsteam'. Take this scenario to its logical conclusion: the "air" side of the accumulator is full of (non-compressable) brake fluid, so you've lost the mechanical advantage afforded by the (working) design and hence hard pedal.
Get thee to a boneyard or parts store and find a replacement accumulator. Plenty of posts here re: similar symptoms and replacement procedures.
