I was getting some noise from the engine compartment so when I parked it on Wednesday I popped the hood to take a look. The alternator was flopping around and at certain rpms I'd get a mechanical clicking like the alternator was popping in its bracket.

Picked up new bushings and new belts yesterday and waited for what was supposed to be (and was) a great day to work on cars, today. It had to have made it to the lower 50s here in the Queen City.

So off comes the AC compressor. Once I'd moved it out of the way I noticed how loose the left most alternator bracket bolt was. I was able to get it with my fingers. With that one out the bracket was completely loose. This was going to be a piece of cake. The bottom bolt wasn't even threaded but it was at least still there. Certainly I didn't leave these that loose.

So I try to move the upper heater hose out of my way, and boy that sure got easy to move all of a sudden. NNNOOOOOOooooooo! Curse you SAAB Continuum! I had broken the plastic upper tube of the heater valve.

I surveyed the damage and was glad to see the gods of car repair had smiled and left enough of the pipe there to get the hose back on. Whew!

Hey you know, if you take those hoses off first there is all kinds of room to get to the alternator. And you don't have to worry about breaking things. Duh. I've had the alternator out before but I always left the hoses attached. Never again. Hopefully there won't be an "again".

Anyway, I didn't notice this before but the bracket bushings had been installed from the wrong sides. No wonder there was always so much play and no wonder I only got three months to a set of belts.

So, She is all back together and happy with her new bushings I hope. Kind of a lame Christmas present but I did spend 4 hours on her and no-one else. That counts too doesn't it?
