The Saab Turbo lives on! the Smog test will be passed!

On my 900 Turbo,, it appears that it is going well,, I removed the 02 sensor and heated with torch at the sensor head until bright orange and then let cool and reinstalled... The airfilter was NG and was removed,, a new one is on order.. The AIC valve is NG and does not work it would seem.. Not sure as it got a bit better after driving 50 miles or so...

so on Inital startup with the cleaned O2 sensor at the test adapter/connector I could not get a good signal as it was static lean...below .1vdc, RPM was above Idle due to AIC. I checked the 02 output and it was doing OK at about .23 static as viewed on Digital VOM. I tried to adjust the AMM but no joy.. I unpluged the NTC and wonders of wonders the 02 sensor came to life. The coolant temp was maybe 180DegF or so... The sensor check out at 200ohms so no issue..

I could now adjust the AMM and get the 02 measurement at about .5vdc and +/- .3vdc at 2 sec cyclic. so Outstanding! Open the throttle up and great news! the system enriched the mixture and became stable about .5 with +.2 - .-3 and some what on the lean side... at 3000rpm

Water Vapor was present at the exhaust outlet so the CAT was ctive from the enrichened mixture... Great News... The system coolant temp was much lower,,, below half way and the fans came on and midway on the gauge... Excellent the systems is running cooler... I plugged the NTC back in and all is well... I guess I need to stimulate the system to get it going! The AIC is not doing well however.. Tapping it to change the idle is only so good for testing... So I will try the bone yard tomorrow... All in all excellent progress and I expect the NO to be down to pass levels on the 25mph run which is were I failed... I have yet to change oil or the spark plugs which I have purchased, The timing is at 15Deg BTDC

I'm thinking very strongly about placing a 1K trimpot in line with the NTC to enrichen the mixture at Higher coolant temps... The AMM only gets you so far... Not far enough for me... maybe 200ohm added to the sensor 200ohm given 400ohm the system will think it is much cooler and be enrich from the ECU... I suppose I could add a switch inside the car for High boost levels and rich mixture by adding resistance to the NTC and MP sensors!

Thanks everyone for the great posts (via the search!) on the California Smog wonders of BS.. It kind of pisses me off,,, But what the heck... My car is now running better!
