Shifter locked up. Need thoughts. Had plans this wkend.

Since I got it my 900 (many miles) ignition has worked with any key, and the reverse lock part of it hasn't worked at all.
I just backed it into a parking spot and as soon as I shut it off I knew something was wrong.
Key WILL NOT turn (not the original, but it still is loose as heck in the cylinder and will pull right out without any feel of pins). And shifter will NOT shift out of reverse.
I tried multiple times, shaking, pushing, twisting, wiggling everything, and no sign of motion.
It is as if the car suddenly has come to its senses and is behaving as it always should have. But the key cylinder is so worn I find it hard to believe it suddenly needs the correct key to turn. And the locks-in-reverse setup suddenly springing to life, after two-plus years of inaction at least, is weirder than weird.
Happened just as dark was falling, and cold returning, half a mile from my place of work where it's warm and dry and lots of light to deal with it. Towing company hung up when I tried them from there and by time I got back to shop, carrying my chihuahua in my jacket, they all said it was too late to help me today.
I have the entire shifter from another car, with rod through the firewall and gasket, here and able to swap in.
Or I can work on it where it sits, with a flashlight to see by, tonight.
Does anyone think shaking it, etc., will get me anything?
