There are other factors that you might consider beyond the compressor, including what went wrong, what are the policies, conversion to R134a, and how much money you are willing to spend.

The first question is what went wrong and is the compressor just bad, or did the system get compromised? If the compressor just burned out, that's one path to fix it. If the system has been compromized, there are other things that need to be addressed.

Is R12 allowed where you live and how much it costs? I'm in the US and R12 is hard to get ahold of and fairly costly, but it provides the best cooling. If R12 is not available, then R-12 alternatives or R134a.

Beyond compressors and oil, which has been covered, you might consider the dryer, O-rings, and possibly hoses. The dryer is fairly cheap and needed if the system has been compromised. If you read/google, then some people recommend o-rings and hoses, something about R134A being smaller then R12.

If R12 is a option one path is fix the root cause, flush the system, new compressor, possibly new dryer and drive on. If R12 is not an option, then you have to decide which is the most cost effective conversion to R134a. The options for R134a range from DIY kits to changing out the hoses, o-rings drier, etc., which could get costly.

Are you planning to keep the car for one year or five years? Are you doing the work or are you paying someone to do the work? If your paying someone, then they should outline the options, if you are going to DIY, check out Jeff and Royce's site fixmysaab.com for additional info.

Happy New Year (since its already 2006 down under, we have about 8 hours left),
