The entire instrument cluster is connected to the car with two very large white 14-pin connectors - one on the left, one on the right.. It's unlikely if not impossible for one of the individual wires to loosen itself from its "host" connector, and if the entire 14-pin connector came out you'd lose the left half of the instrument cluster.
I'd suspect the tach itself may have died, or the flexible circuit on the back of the instrument cluster. Either way, you've got some surgery ahead of you...
