Spratel, That is the older design cooler. The newer one is a unit similar to the engine oil cooler but mounted on the right side. I rebuilt a lot of those T-37 transaxles but can't say that the coolers were ever at fault, old or new style. The T-37s kind of got a bum rap. They aren't really bad, as 3 speed automatics go. The biggest complaint I had was that the hard parts were all captive items so had to be bought from Saab and that made the rebuilding very expensive. For instance, ten years ago a pump was about $650.00 from Saab and lots of them needed pumps at 150,000+ miles which is when they usually came out of the car. I used to put $150.00 in machine work into reconditioning a usuable T-37 pump. A factory reconditioned pump for most auto's is usually less than $100.00. I think a lot of people were just disappointed about not having a four speed automatic in such a car. Keep in mind that you now have 3 fluids in the bowels. The 10-30 (or 10-40) motor oil, the type F atf and the 80/90w in the final drive. People tended to ignore the final drive until the car screeched to a halt thanks to a nice black and blue and red hot ring and pinion (boat anchor now).
