I just did the forensics on my 5 speed -- I removed the differential cover as there is no drain plug for the gear oil on my year car. If you can drain the oil from a plug, then do so, and save it for review later. Take off the differential cover, and there will be a screen and a magnet in the differential cover. Look at the screen for any large pieces and save them -- someone who knows the gearbox can probably tell you what the piece is -- belive it or not. Then take a close look at the magnet area. There will probably be an accumulation of metal powder impregnated into a thicker gooey material. If it is minimal, and there are no obvious big pieces near the magnet or the screen, you are probably OK. Now that the differential cover is off, you can look into the box and see if there is any obvious damage. When you look at the oil, review it for any metal pieces -- there are probably some experts that could analize it if there were any question s about unusual color or composition. If you can spin the gears by rotating the wheels, and watch the shifting, then that would be a bonus as well. Please let us know what you find in the tomb!
