Normally, when you put the shifter in neutral, it sits pretty much straight up and down. If you push it to the side, it springs back. That's because there is a spring on the shifter linkage. If it breaks, the shifter flops around. I've found it hard to find the right gears like this.
I've had this break, and it isn't that hard to fix. Remove the cover where the gearshift is, and you'll see the shifter sits on a large aluminum casting. If you pull the center console out, where it meets the shifter section, that will give you access.
At the front of the aluminum casting with the gearshift, you'll see a rod going forward towards the transmission. If you look under the rod (a little mirror helps here), you'll probably see the broken spring. It's just a standard coil spring, a shortened version of what would close a screen door. In my case, I think the end of the spring busted off. I just took the pieces down to my local hardware store, and they pulled out the Box O' Springs, and I hunted around for one like it. It took some fiddling with a needle nose pliers to get it in, but I was successful. It requires nearly standing on your head in the footwell to get a good view, but it's not technically hard.
Hint - Get yourself a couple of feet of dental floss. Thread the floss through the body of the spring, and have about a foot of floss on either side. Why? When you install the spring, there is a good chance that while you're trying to put it in, the end will slip out of the grip of the needle nose pliers, and it'll go flying. With the floss 'leash', not only won't it go far, but if it drops down into the mechanism below the shifter, you can simply pull it out. After you get the spring in place, just pull the floss out.
