Shock replacement help requested Posted by Arabiflora [Email] ![]() ![]() |
OK, so I'm all psyched-up to refurbish the front suspension of my '88 900S. My aim is to replace ball joints, tie rod ends, and shocks to alleviate shimmy and shake in front end. Site sponsor sent half of the order (2 ball joints and tie rod ends) but back-ordered shocks and other two ball joints (grrr).
Determined to get the job done this weekend (and having destructively de-shocked the pass. side already), I went about town seeking shocks, finally finding a pair of KYB-GR2's at Bumper-to-Bumper at 10 past 6 on this Friday night. YAY!!!
Or, maybe, not so much. As recounted in a previous post, I inherited a pair of new Gabriel shocks with an '88 900 that was briefly mine. The car is gone but I kept the shocks for my '88, only to find that they don't actually seem to fit... and in the same non-fitting way, neither do the KYBs.
To whit: The Gabriels and the KYBs have a metal bushing embedded in the rubber outer bushing that fits snugly in the lower shock socket. Were it not for that metal bushing I think either pair of shocks would fit quite nicely over the shock mounting stud of the car.
So here's my conundrum: Do I wait for site sponsor shocks (Boge/Sachs) to arrive and hope that they lack the interior metal bushing (I can't tell from the eProduct picture) or do I drive out the bushings on my 'free' shocks and return both other sets? If it matters, price range on these options range from $0 (inherited, on hand), $35/shock and kit (KYB, on hand) to about $50/shock (Boge, maybe mid-week); if any of these brands are known losers please let me know, but be advised that the car is an '88 900S with about 350,000 miles. We've gotten to that point (and WILL get to 400k) by gentle driving, so I'm not looking for a performance shock per se, I just want something that (a) fits and (b) does its job.
Sorry this is so long, any suggestions/advice appreciated and warmly welcomed.
