1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I thought I was getting too old to monkey with cars again BUT...in the last 10 years I've purchased a 1990 Audi V8 quattro, a 1985 Benz 560SEC coupe, a 1990 Mazda Miata, an MB 420SEL, and most recently my return to Saab with a troublesome but GAWjuss 89 turbo convertible 5 speed. ("troublesome" meaning small things so far - love the drive) One thing I've learned from buying these vintage vehicles is this, the FIRST thing to do is get a bunch of wire brushes and clean every possible connection I can. It's amazing what this will do to correct a host of problems. The 1990 Audi V8 quattro was a great car, but the expense of repairing it and the arrogance of Audi made me donate the car. I'll never look at another Audi again, period. The Benz 560SEC was also a great car BUT...unlike a Saab of similar age it became obvious real soon that it was beyond my scope in terms of upkeep. (By the way, parts guys in Benz dealerships are great.) The Miata...absolutely my favorite...and the guys at Wantagh Mazda parts could not have been better. The reason I purchased the Saab 89 was because I loved the Miata but needed more car, i.e., space. I have a bunch of things to do in the Saab, and after one month of owning one again I don't mind doing them - it's a great car, timeless design, and it drives like a summuvabitch. This is one solid piece of engineering - even with the convertible this car feels like a solid piece of metal. I was going to purchase a 2004 9-3, but after just 5 minutes of feeling the steering I purchased an Acura. My 89's steering feels like SAAB engineering, the '04 felt like a piece of crap. One last thought: how obvious is it that GM has its head up it's ass when they buy into SAAB and shortly thereafter the hatch model disappears - only to have them create a hatch in a freaking malibu? BRING THE SAAB HATCHBACK BACK!!! Thanks to all who've helped me so far - this is a great resource!
