Well, I spent the day looking at the 86 16V Turbo I bought last week, found some interesting things.
1. I took all the plumbing off and out from airbox to throttlebody. Most fittings were loose and probably leaking. Took all out and cleaned well, inspected boots, lines, hoses etc. Hooter valve holds vacuum. All went back in well. Not happy with what appears to be real poor fiting of airbox cover and air box to AMM. I think I am going to replace it with a cone K&N filter.
2. The lower radiator hose/autotrans cooler needs new hoses, and one of the AT cooling lines leaks. Need to replace all that. Looks real rusty at the hose/cooler attachment, will probably have to replace it all. May go for a different type of cooler, but we'll see.
3. Connections to the alternator look sparce, is this a 3 wire hook up? or did I miss some stuff.
4. Air mass meter seems to be working, has filiment, and is red after shutting off. Idle gets shaky when I unplug it, and rpms drop.
5. Idle Stabilizer Valve....... Well, this was interesting Hose was plugged with a rag..... Not sure why. Good news was that the valve ws not crudded up and stuck. moved freely. Not sure if teh electrical parts work, just that it is free. Does not effect idle speed when plugged/unplugged. I think the idle is held high mechanically with the set screw on the throttle body. WIll get into deeper once I change the oil cam lines, sont want to run it again till that is done.
6. While I had the plumbing off, I checked out the turbo, looks GREAT! The vanes are all perfect, the unit spins smoothly, feels right, and has no side to side play or wiggle. Waste gate valve moves smoothly, and return spring is firm and no play. ALL GOOD NEWS.
OK< thats the easy stuff.......
7. CAM oil tubes. These were shot, the main connection to both banks at the supply end are broken. Cam lobes, chain, and gears looked great though, and I could see no scoring on the lifter shims. I see that these as I thought put oil over the cam bearing and are a very loose fit, not something that is designed to take pressure. I say this because some have said that these lines supply the oil that "pumps" up the hydraulic lifters. I cant see how this is... I can see them delivering oil to the top of teh cam/lifter/camlobe, but not to supply oil into the lifter. THe oil lines basically sit in the head, nothing holds them in, just a light press fit. There is no way they are delivering enough pressure to pump the lifters up. Can someone explain this to me??
8. There was no checkvalve on the PCV vacuum line, and I broke the fitting trying to get it out... GRRR. Plus the main PCV line has a leak in it. I need to replace or splice this line. It is strange, can someone explain it? It goes from the top of the valve cover down to the main intake pipe in the inlet side of teh turbo. BUT... This hose also Y's off and a line goes over to the waterpump area? what is this? So, I need a new fitting, checkvalve, and splice the hose or put a new one on.
9. Finally, the APC system.... I've never really looked at this too much before on my other SAABS, but can someone go over it for me? I understand what it does, how it works, etc, BUT... What I dont understand is the vacuum hose layout. There are 3 hoses, one on the turbo plumbing just before the turbo, one to the fitting on the turbo housing itself, and the third to the wastegate actuator. Her is my question, what goes to what, and Where does teh vacuum strong enough to overpower the wastegate spring come from? THANKS!
Overall, was a rewarding day. After all was removed, replaced, and gone over I started and ran the car, (had to jury rig the PCV thing I broke) and it ran without stalling. Let it idle for a good 25 minutes, a bit of revving too, did a stall test of teh torque convertor, made good boost, heard turbo spool up and all. I diddnt take it for a drive, but I seem to have removed the stalling problem it had. I do think the cat is clogged though. The exhaust is a total redo anyhow, including headpipe, sems when they did the swap, they left an unused mount down there and it rubbed through teh pipe. I may have a shop fix it for me, but it needs a new donut gasket so it will all come off, and I'll inspect & replace.
Overall, I'm happier than ever with the purchase, once the engine oil situation is fixed, I'll take it out and beat on it (with respect of course) a bit to see what else is what. Still need to inspect A arms & suspension overall, that is my next day, gonna jack it up, pull the tires and just crawl underneath for a while.
Sorry this is so long. Would appreciate any input.
