Hey Scott, you are correct about having to remove the whole thing as a unit. Im not sure how long it will take you as is difficult to know what your skill level is and what tools you have. Im sure if you do a search on this board for engine / trans replacement you will find a good outline of the procedure.
basically the hoods gotta come off ( throw a towel on the roof and have a friend help you put the hood on the roof ) you gotta drain the anti freeze , disconnet all the stuff ( you know the stuff ) and then you gotta hoist the motor and tranny ( dont forget to disconnect the axles! ) out of the top, ( its helpful if you have someone help you do this so the motor and tranny dont keep banging into the firewall, but have em keep thier fingers outta there) Set it down on the ground and then unbolt the tranny from the engine.
After that - your on your own with rebuilding that 5 speed, i missed that course and have to pay others to do that job!
Whilst you have the motor out you should really do the oil pump o ring and seal cause its real easy with the motor out, check the water pump, maybe even the steering rack. Its really easy to do all those things when the motor and trans are out but not so easy with em in.
GOod luck
Andrew
