Wes, Those shims determine the preload for the differential side bearings and the backlash for the ring and pinion assembly. It is very important that they stay right where they are. That is, the shims must not be swapped from side to side or otherwise changed. The correct way to swap companion flanges from one unit to the other is; remove the six bolts from the companion flange housing on one side of the tranny (only) and pull out the assembly with shims. There's a button and spring on the inner end, don't lose it. Now you remove the snap ring that's down in the assembly and push the companion flange out of the housing. Push in the new Com'p. Fl'ge. and install the snap ring then bolt the housing back on the tranny using the shims that were there originally. Now do the other side. Here's some tips; Get a piece of 1" steel water pipe about 9-10" long with at least one squarely cut end. Before you try to remove the snap ring set the assembly greasy end down on a work bench and slide the pipe over the C.F. shaft. Now tap/hit it with a hammer lightly. That drives the snap ring and bearing down and releases any side pressure on the snap ring that has developed. (The snap ring gets pinched when the gearbox operates). If you try to spread the snap ring without doing this you will damage it. You can now remove the button and spring and hold the housing while you drive out the shaft with a plastic mallet BUT I prefer to press it out, so find a freind with a hyd. press. If you don't replace the axle seal you will regret it immediately. Use only genuine Saab seal here. Do the O'ring on the housing too and take a hard look at the axle bearing in the housing. They are cheap and they can get pretty gnarly. To put the housing on the C.F. just drive it down with the pipe and a mallet until it seats and then DON'T FORGET to install the snap ring. If the snap ring's not a tight fit, replace it. Coat the six bolts with Permatex 'Form-a-gasket #2' or you'll have an oil leak. Then the shims are right back where they were with the same old companion flange housings used to set up the diff. Good luck.
