There is a chance that the sticking key got stuck in the start position the last time you drove the car. When this happens, you continue to send current to the starter solenoid in an unfused yellow wire that goes from the ignition switch directly to the starter. This wire will melt adjacent wires in the harness from the ignition switch to the fuse box and can cause shorting of the lighting circuit and all sorts of wierd electrical problems.

You can check this by connecting a volt meter between the starter solenoid wire at the solenoid and any ground. Have a helper turn the key to start, if no or very low voltage at the solenoid, you have a problem in the ignition switch or the wiring that I just described. First remove the console covers to expose the ignition switch. Disconnect the yellow wire from the switch. Now, turn the key to start and check for 12 volts at the switch terminal where the yellow wire was. If so, your switch is probably OK and the problem is in the harness.

The harness runs under the carpet alongside the console tunnel and then crosses under the pedals up to the 29 pin bulkhead electical connectors. You will have to pull the driver seat and remove the knee bolster and console to be able to peel back the carpet. If the harness shows evidence of melting, it could also mean that the plastic bulkhead connector is melted. All melted wires must be separated and taped. All pins on the connector must be checked for continuity. With any luck the bulkhead connector is OK except for the junction for the solenoid power, and you can just fix the wires and then run a new wire from the ignition switch directly to the solenoid, bypassing the bulkhead connector. You can run the wire though any convenient firewall grommet. This job will take a weekend...maybe day and a half. You should have a Bentley manual at hand before tackling this.
