Lights? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 1990 900 2 problems, Dominic Malizia, Tue, 17 Jan 2006 10:51:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Question 1 - when the battery isn't charging, do you get an alternator (Battery) light?
If you don't - if you turn the key to ON, but don't start the car, do you get an alternator (Battery light?).
With the key ON but the engine not started, you must get a battery light. Otherwise, the alternator won't work. There is a circuit from the battery, through the key, to the light, through a thin wire to the back of the alternator. That circuit provides power to the alternator to start working. If the bulb is burned out, or the thin wire not connected, the alternator will spin but not produce current. The battery won't be charged and will die.
If the light is working, I'm assuming that the Alternator light stays on when the engine is running. If it isn't, please let us know.
Have you put a voltmeter on the battery? The voltage should jump up to above 13 volts when the alternator is running.
Other questions - why did you replace the alternator? Did you have the same symptoms before replacing it as you have now?
