Instead of removing the small nuts on the back of the starter that hold it to the bracket, I've always found it easier to remove the bolts that hold the bracket to the engine block and take the bracket out with the starter. When putting the bracket on the new starter, leave the little bolts a little loose until everything else is bolted back in to allow for small variations in mounting, then tighten them.
I believe RCS is right about the differences between the starters on the 8V and 16V motors.
