I have a '92 S convertible. I also have an '88 base car.
I don't need a stronger motor, in fact I wish I had taller gearing in the S. If I wanted to, I would go to a junkyard and pick apart a turbo and put a light pressure setup since the 2.1 motor in '92 readily accepts it. I don't drive with my right foot on the floor all the time (and the gas pedal beneath it) and if I do the 2.1 seems to be enough for me. A turbo will be more of a maintenance concern if it's been driven hard or neglected, just like a naturally-aspirated motor, but with a bigger price tag and more demands for maintenance.
I avoid 900 automatics like the plague. Pure trash.
My convertible is not a race car; it likes open roads, but if I wanted something to drive hard I'd prefer the extra chassis stiffness of a 2-, 3-, or 4-door 900. The lack of (visible) body structure is a bit sobering too. I'd rather enjoy the ride, and I do. My convertible needed some work (she still does) and some money, but that's because it's a used car. So whether or not you spring for the extra 20 horsepower should be entirely up to how you want to drive it, how much you want to contribute toward it, and how far you want it to get you.
Resale value to me is a joke specifically reserved for German cars. By the time I "sell" my cars, they'll be really, most sincerely dead and not worth anything. That's why I take such good care of them (and don't drive hard): because I have a long way to go yet. 125k on the convertible? A baby. 200k on the '88? Okay, broken in, but still not that rusty (in the structurally-significant areas) and wearing four snow tires, to chew up the salt so the convertible doesn't have to. My last tank of gas gave me just shy of 31 MPG, and the last time any of my motors exceeded 4000 RPM was sometime in October. Three bucks a gallon. And I've driven this way since 1999 when the stuff was half as expensive.
You decide. My best advice to you: do your homework before you buy any car. That includes maintenance records and history (bring the VIN to a dealer), and an independent inspection by a mechanic you trust. Know what you're willing to say no to. And, as you've already learned, consult this bulletin board.
