This is a typical repair method for mainshaft jet engine bearings as well. Bet that makes you feel better when you fly that the 1 foot diameter bearings have been "reworked" by grinding the races and upsizing the balls. They cost about $10K new, so repairing them is a cost effective way to restore the function. I am surprised that they do this on an automobile part, as it is so inexpensive in comparison. We rebuilt the pillow block bearings in Neil Armstrong's Bell Aircobra -- the propeller shaft came forward (Allison V12 was behind the pilot) and the shaft spun right next to the seat. We had to rebuild as there weren't any left on the planet, so race regrind and "bigger balls" were the answer.
