Performance report - 2.0T 185hp version - Posted by Landjet [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Today I was finally able to confirm that the timing marks on the flywheel, and the camshafts were in perfect alignment. I couldn't ask for a better orientation. I enhanced the flywheel numbers with a touch of white testors enamel, and the wiped it off, so the numbers stood out better. I had the bell housing off to find the tommyknocker -- part of the problem was the bell housing was slightly rubbing on the flywheel, as it had be distorted by either an agressive mechanic or warpage from age. The pilot bearing still needs to be addressed from previous posts.
I set the timing at 20 degrees - it is a Commemorative, so the distributor is 2 degrees extra retard. The timing was at 15 degrees when measured with the bell housing attached, and was originally set at 16. Now the performance is remarkable -- on my hill climbs to check to see if the boost cuts out, it now just spins the wheels in 2nd, so I have to find a steeper hill.
Checking the base boost, the max I was able to measure was 4.5PSI. From the specs I have seen, it should be set at 6.3.
Talladega901 may have a base boost setting recommendation.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Essentially, other than setting the timing to 20 degrees, everything is stock. I wanted to see what the best performance I could get before I started tweaking the knobs.
I do have plans to mod the red box, injectors, resistors, etc etc.
