Rear brake calipers?
For rear calipers through the end of the '87 model year, gently squeeze the piston back with a pair of adjustable pliers. Don't chew up the rubber boot around the piston.
For rear calipers 1988 and newer, remove the 14 mm bolt cover, then reach inside that space with a 4 mm hex socket or allen wrench and turn the piston travel limiting screw counterclockwise until it bottoms out. Don't crank on these screws hard; they strip easily. On my '88 when one of the pistons was hanging in its bore, I had to loosen the limit screw a couple of turns, squeeze the piston a little more, and repeat until it was all the way back.

I think you may be confusing this operation with the screw-in procedure on 1987 and older front calipers with the sliding yoke, ratcheting piston, and integral parking brake. Those go in clockwise, and Bentley says a quarter turn at a time (quarter turn, squeeze piston, repeat). I wouldn't know about those since it's been eight years since I've worked on them, but I've got the manual with both procedures nonetheless.
