1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
ok, so nearly done with my suspension refresh. swapped in new inner driver, ball joints, tie rod ends, shocks. had a problem with new cv axle not fitting correctly, so i'm waiting for a replacement before i can finish (grrr...). despite what i'd read, it was really an easy job all around. ball joints came out no prob (afaik, car has never seen snow though). they were toast. can't wait to drive it now, i think it'll be a dramatic difference.
questions:
1) bentley says the lower shock mount bolt should be tightned to 100 Nm. i promptly stripped both the nut and the stud on both sides trying this. is this really the correct torque? i'll need to rethread the studs now...
2) no value given for the lower mount bolt in the rear. anyone know what this should be? i just cranked 'er down good.
what i learned:
1) air tools are totally worth it, and are cool. they make things much easier.
2) front shocks: for the driver side, the windshield fluid resevoir needs to be moved. 1 bolt, and a couple of wire ties need to be removed. cold air intake on my turbo also needs to be removed. the air hammer on the top nut made quick work of it. to remove the old ones, just remove lower bolt and yank on it till it snaps. thanks to the list for that tip. quick, and you get to break something. in order to get the bushing/nut on the driver side shock, i slid the bushing down a long screwdriver over the shock. to get the nut on, i used a magnetic pick up tool to lower it on the shock, turn it a few times to start it. then the air gun did the rest. this would have been damn near impossible with just hand tools i think; it's a real tight space (especially with abs resevoir), and keeping the shock from turning would have been tough.
3) rear shocks: pretty straightforward. i used a jack with a socket on it under the lower shock mount after the bolt was removed. it helps if the other side of the car is jacked up also. to get the new one in there, i tapped the metal sleeve on the shock with a hammer/screwdriver.
