this is what I found on my 1987. first, it kept blowing the fuse in the engine compartment on the fenderwell. it's just in front of the free air intake.
if you remove the rear seat there are two relays (may be brown) that are used in tandem to raise or lower the top. it's a DC motor so the circuit is switched to provide DC voltage to the motor in forward or reverse direction. I trouble shot everything and finally got down to the relays themselves. If you have taken a window switch apart to clean the contacts (they get pitted and burned and then don't work) to make them work again, this is what I needed to do to the contacts in the relays. They cost in the order of $45 each and I didn't want to pay that...
So, I carefully opened the cans and looked at the contacts, they were pitted very much like the window contacts. I used 800 grit paper wrapped around a flat small piece of metal and buffed the contacts. be carefull and don't bend any of hte contacts. two per relay. it worked for me.
