Likely no one will have a limited slip. Saab used to sell them for the 99 but that was through their rally catalog in the 70s.
LSDs do not improve handling, they improve traction under acceleration. For a high-torque fwd like the Saab 900 it is a good idea to have one if you are into high performance. Except for the lowest-powered race cars, or where a LSD is not allowed by rules, nearly all race cars will have an LSD.
As for durability, it depends on the brand and how the car is used. Some brands have a lifetime warranty, even for racing (Quaife). Clutch type differentials are much-maligned on the internet for wearing out, but usually the naysayers wouldn't know a diff clutch plate if it hit them on the nose. They are also adjustable.
Installation requires skill, shims, and precision measurement tools - it is not a DIY job.
The best type of differential for a street driven car is the torsen. This is the type that Quaife manufactures (there are many other brands that make torsens too). The clutch type is better for rwd cars (some Volvos came with them) but a clutch type differential will make a fwd understeer, and can be chattery around slow corners.
