probably the ignition pulse amplifier Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Reasons Tach isn't working???, Joonyerr, Sat, 4 Feb 2006 19:19:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
joonyerr, I haven't had too many tach. problems but the circuit is pretty simple. The tach. gets it power from fuse #7 and recieves it's signal from the ignition pulse amplifier (IPA) which is inside the fuse box on the left inner fender and looks just like a black cuboidal relay. Those ignition pulse amplifiers are very problematic and even Saab was telling their tech's. to just remove them and install a jumper. Only the '87 cars even had the IPA. The tach. is grounded via pin #2, black wire. Make sure that fuse #22 is good. That's the source for the IPA. Finally pull out the IPA and jumper the socket terminals marked TD-J and TD-O (look at the IPA module). If that gets your tach. working then just make a secure permanent jumper and throw the IPA away. Of course you may just have a defective tach. (boneyard time). Also don't confuse the IPA with the "ignition amplifier" which is screwed to the left inner fender in front of the wheel. THAT you need. Cheers.
