Charlton H., (were you in Ben Hur and Will Penny?) How hard is it to shift into third? Any grinding or difficult engagement? If the problem was originating at the 3rd synchro then I would expect some difficult engagement of third. Sometimes the stamped steel sychro spring retainers will break down and let the spring unwind causing the balk (synchro) ring to sit improperly with eventual catastrophic failure. You know, if it shifts in and out of third smoothly I think that I would take a hard look at the right motor mount and see if the shift control rod (from the shift lever to the transaxle) is maybe contacting something when it is in third position. Under Load is when a bad motor mount (or a real bad pinion bearing) expresses itself. Of course you may just have bad/broken teeth on your third gear (main or cluster). Third does take a thrashing with some drivers. Good luck.
