All you need is the proper reference voltage and an oscilloscope or DVOM, and prob a 1K ohm load resistor.
Another way that works for volvos (but on the car):
- Disconnect the/red and blue leads from ignition coil. - Measure voltage between signal terminal (you'll have to figure this one out) and ground. NOTE: Connector must be attached to control unit. - Switch on ignition. Turn crankshaft by hand. Voltage should indicate OVER 1.8V each time a vane passes Hall generator. Instrument should read approx."0" (0 - 0.7V) each time an opening passes Hall generator. Correct voltage: Less then 0.7V or more than 1.8V.
The bottom line is all hall effect sensors essentially use three wires, one for power in, one for ground, and one for signal. I would use a small 9v battery with a current limiting load resistor (1K works fine!) to the power terminal and ground the ground terminal and then turn the dizzy by hand and monitor the on/off function from the remaining wire (you should get a voltage signal from the third wire to ground that indicates the hall sensor is functioning). Note that without an oscilloscope you have no means of evaluating the 'crispness' of the waveform which in an ideal world should be square wave.
