Ehhhh... I doubt it's the antenna, but you could check. Just carefully peel back the fuzzy mat on the side of the trunk (look for the quarter-turn fasteners and take them out with a flat blade screwdriver) and be sure the large, brown antenna lead is connected. Also be sure to check the radio fuses inside the radio cage, and under the rear seat (number 5, center bottom). Otherwise, it sounds like a transistor or cap opening up, which these radios are known for. Wasyl in Utica will rebuild/exchange for you, or get a known good radio from a junkyard donor, or listen to that nice primary chain noise for a while.
For example, the right front speaker on my '92 S will cut out and in whenever it feels like it; usually turning the radio off for a minute or two will cure it. The contacts on the speaker are fine, and it'll cut back in with a pop sometimes. If you pull the radio cage out, check the jumper cap(s) if any and be sure they're seated, but it's probably internal to the radio.
And of course, mine would play a tape for about fifteen seconds and then spit it out again. They're finnicky. My state tax return should take care of that.
