Oy vey, be sure you bring the shifter from the '87 in. In mid-'86 the centering mechanism moved from the shifter to the transmission. I aligned my cars by hand-selecting the gear at the gearbox, putting the shifter in the correct position, joining the link rod, then inserting the dowel/punch, double-checking the shifter is in the right place, and snugging it all down. It'll probably take you three or four tries to get it just right, as was the case in both of mine (sedan after the trans swap, convertible after I figured out why fifth gear didn't work). Be sure the plastic ball at the base of the shift lever isn't too worn out and is well-supplied with grease. While it's out that is a good time to check the reverse lockout stud (mine was half worn off, proof that previous owners didn't know how to shift.)
