its bad all the way around.. you can drive it with out the belt but your going to have to pump out the power steering fluid, unhook the top hose off your power fluid resivor then start your car (with the belt still on the pump) all the fluid will pump out of your system and on to the floor if you dont funnel the fluid to a container. the reason why the fluid needs to be pumped out,, if you leave the fluid in the steering rack, the steering wheel would still give great resistance, then you would be ripping on the steering shafts bearings, (that is if you can turn it)but to make things worse after u drain the fluid out of the steering rack, your going to be tareing on the racks seals, however the ware on the rack would take a good while before it is destroyed. (id say bout 3yrs)
if you have orderd a new pump id just deal with the noise, no harm you can do at this point. try this.
when you hear the noise leave the car running and pop the hood
look at the power steering fluid. if you find lots of bubbles in the fluid, .. (i had the same prob.)
the pump is gone. -or on its way out-
i never messed with taken off the belts or draining the rack, just bought a new pump and kept filling the fluid till it came.
i had the great honor of instaling the pump.
if you plan on instaling it here is a tip,
loosen the bolt to the motor mount on the passenger side bout a half a inch off the mount, no need to unscrew it all the way.
then get a man jack and jack up the motor,
this will give you about 3 inches to play with when you are trying to remove the old pump, after the motor is jacked up the pump will slip out of its little area like white on rice.
the new pump goes in the reverse of taken the old one out.
have fun i know i sure did.
