Central Locking on a 1994 900CT

Having owned many Saabs, I thought I had a good understanding of the central locking system. I recently purchased a high mileage 94 and started fixing it's issues. I made an assumption that the central locking had a problem because it does not function with my door key. I took the door apart to try to fix and was surprised to find a 2 wire actuator rather than the 3 wire actuator that I was expecting. I scratched my head for quite a while trying to figure out how this would work. Finally I looked in my owner's manual and discovered that it cannot be activated with the key. Does anyone know why they made that change? I am assuming the only way to use the central locking is to have the remote (which I don't have)which also means the Saab alarm system is useless. Is all of this correct?
