there is yet another problem with this too. if you take the left side circuit board loose look where cable plugs into the board. three spade connectors from one end you may see that the connector itself is crusty and that the plastic around it looks like it melted. this happens because the power for both brake lights goes through the left side and out again to the right side for the brakes. if this has gone too far just adding the additional ground line won't fix it (you can try first). the connector itself is causing too much resistance and it just gets worse and worse. the only real solution is to replace the circuit board *and* the connector. Start with the circuit board, if that isn't 100% all of the time then you need to replace the connector that plugs into it. you can go to a junk yard and search for a good connector. I like to follow the harness all the way to the left, and then back into the center, and it goes under the spare tire access door and up and under the support in the middle. I cut them there and replace the *entire* harness. Some just do the left light cable alone. you can source the circuit board from eEuroparts.com. this is also the *same* for convertibles from 86-94 on the 900's. I'm working to get my website up with pictures and write ups for stuff we've done. check for http://www.oldsaab.com in about a month.
