I drained and refilled with the Saab Synth gear oil (It's orange). I'd been having the same problem on my convertible (kind of hanging up in fifth, not engaging fifth when it's hot) and this fixed it completely. Plus I've got a new gasket set on the box, so everything's leak free for a change. I have around 6k on the new fluid and it works great. I still shift gently and often double-clutch because I want this gearbox to last until 250k or so, and I'm only halfway there. That probably means new fluid every other year. This gearbox was installed by the previous owner at great expense, and then the car sold to me because she thought fifth gear was toasted. I changed that (fairly annoying) rubber brick in the shift linkage, realigned everything (kinda helped, but not much), replaced the shifter she broke (helped with gear selection), and changed the fluid (no more first or fifth gear grindage). I was also very surprised to find out fresh fluid could cure all that, but now I'm sold. I had almost no metal in there, so I think the box is good to go (except that the drain plug won't come out... typical).
