Relieve the pressure, test for play. By the time you notice play while driving, they're shot. You can also tell which one is bad by noticing which ball joint has a torn boot and no grease left in it. I was all set to replace mine as a "present to the car" for surviving two years of Buffalo, and I kept putting it off, then finally got it done. I did the two uppers myself (the bolts came out easily) and farmed the lower ones (an afternoon with a torch, a hacksaw, and a drill, we don't oversalt!). No more clunks. Why now? In the course of four days I saw a Blazer with a severe case of negative camber (ball joint) and a Caravan steering itself in two directions at once (tie rod end). The front suspension spring pre-loads one A-arm against the other, so the play only becomes noticeable when the suspension is moving.
