clutch clatter at idle, disappears when pedal pushed

I have a soft clatter that can *just* be heard over all the other little noises my 1983 900T makes. The noise essentially disappears when I rev the engine or push the pedal in.
I'm resolved to replacing the clutch, but I'm curious just which component is making the noise...AND...how serious is the problem? Should I leave it parked until the parts come in?
