You're likely out of refergerant. The R-12 isn't worth hunting down (or paying for $$$) so first get the system evacuated. You can do this yourself with a jerryrigged mityvac brake bleeder....source an OLD empty disposeable 134a all in one recharge can with attached hose & BRASS head, cut off the hose at the can - cut off & recover the plastic nipple comming off the "shaving cream dispenser". This will be used to couple the hose to your mittyvac. Take the BRASS head apart (I don't believe this is possible w/the newer plastic heads)& remove the one way valve w/needle nose pliers. Presto - you're own AC evac tool!...If you can't find a 134 can w/the brass head - try some of parts stores that you would never normally shop at, the more out of the way the better. Chances are there's a dusty shelf somewhere with just what you need. Then go & get a 134a retro-fit kit for $29 at Walmart - if you're system is in good working condition, this will do the trick. One alternative to the Mittyvac aproach would be to go to a small auto repair shop (that services AC) & offer them $10 to evac your system. Good luck!
