Aha! Now I remember! The problem is in the translation done by goodyear. If you divide 980 by 25.4, you get 38.6", for which they assume they gave the right number. The difference is that the Metric system uses the pitch length of the belt (roughly where the cord rides) and Americans use the outside length, so you really want a belt that is 39.1" . Try for 15391, that will be exactly what you took off, and will make a WORLD of difference.
You will then have to "walk" the belt on, one groove at a time, alternating from top to bottom.
You'll probably want to punch the parts guy at the store too, but he only went by the incorrect book.
