John, There is some dipute on this, but I would avoid using a complete rebuilt axle assembly. They seem to have about 50% reliability. Here's the better fix; First determine whether you need the inner CV or outer CV. What's the problem? Does it clatter while rounding a corner only? That's generally the outer CV. Does it shake the car when accelerating straight ahead? That's usually an inner CV. You can grab the axle with your hand and try to rotate it and shake it latterally. When you do that you may notice that either the axle shaft to inner CV displays significant slop or the axle shaft to outer CV displays slop. Very common on S cars to lose the grease in the inner right side CV and blow the tripod bearing owing to the exhaust pipe proximity. That is easily detected using the aforementioned check. Replacing just the inner driver and tripod is fairly easy and a reliable proper fix. It requires the same axle removal procedure as installing a rebuilt axle and then just a bit more work to place the new tripod bearing on the shaft. once the axle is out stick a finger in the inner driver and feel the lands where the tripod bearing rollers live. If there are sizable depressions then you'll have to replace the inner driver. Basically what I'm suggesting is that you find the bad part (of the axle unit) and replace only that part. A torn boot is often the best indicator of which CV is in need of work. If your outer CV is clattering take your axle to a Saab indy shop and have them open it up and see if cleaning and a new boot with fresh grease will cure it. That often does, depends on the amount of wear, which can best be judged by disassembly and inspection. Dry, dirty Rzeppa joints (outer CVs) will clatter. (You could also do that yourself if you are adventurous). Use genuine OEM boots too. There is a special plier-like tool for banding the boots but don't let that stop you (borrow one or have a shop crimp your bands). Whichever CV you fix check the boot on the other and cram some fresh CV grease in there too. Untorn boots and fresh grease more than anything else keep CVs working (almost forever). Good luck.
