Wierd wire going to A/C compressor

I think this is a DIY gone wrong, but just in case...
I'm almost done the latest resurection of the 86 SPG and was swaping injectors out (one was leaking - BTW thank for helping with part #'s I had something that would work)
Anyway, saw the tell tale signs of wire insulation that was cooked. So I peeled back all the tape and the wire shroud and found this thing in the wiring - from this thingy all the way to the compressor the insulation was toast. All others wires were A-OK!
I can post picture if someone can tell me how, but ..
looks like two male spade connectors crimped onto the wire at each end with about 5 inches of "thing" in between - then thing consists of a heavy wire, about the size and color as solder with no shield - loops out of the male crimp end does a 180 turn - into a something like a coller, hard to explain, there are some numbers on it, about 8mm by 8mm cylinder - then out - another 180 back into the crimp end.
Should there be something there? It was covered in the factory shrink wrap (or at least looks that way). I have the A/C disconnected right now, but i did get a little sunburn today, so the heat is around the corner and I'd rather not start another electrical fire.
Thanks!!
Carl
