Plugs/wires/Distributor Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: rough boost problem, brian, Tue, 14 Mar 2006 20:09:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This sounds like engine miss under boost. As the internal cylinder pressure increases, it is harder for a spark to jump. If the spark plug gap is too wide, under boost the spark just won't jump. This results in an engine miss and rough running.
The same problem can be caused by old, leaky plug wires or a worn distributor cap/rotor. With old wires, the spark will take the easy way out, and under boost may not jump the spark, but from the plug wire to the nearest grounded bit of metal. With a worn distributor cap or rotor, that essentially increases the total gap, and can cause misfire.
Make sure your plugs are new and properly gapped to spec. Don't assume they come out of the box properly gapped. And as plugs age, the gap usually increases. If the wires, cap and rotor are over 3 years old, replace them, or if they look damaged.
