I had a bad idle problem when the engine was cold. Idle was swinging up and down by 800 - 900 rpm and would sometimes stall if I didn't use the gas pedal to keep it going. The idle leveled out as soon as the engine warmed up half way to the green zone on the temp dial. I replaced the O2 sensor cause it was original w/ 86K on it but it didn't correct the swinging idle when cold. I think that once the O2 sensor ( original & new) warmed up it sent a signal to the ECU to correct the idle. The problem turned out to be a blown off hose at the by pass valve ( the hose which runs from the BPV to the throttle box ). I reconnected the hose and secured it with a screw clamp and the idle problem was immediately fixed. Check for vacuum leaks in small hoses and also the larger hoses at the by pass valve and AIC. The original plastic slide clamps at the bypass valve should be replaced with screw type radiator clamps as the slide clamps can fail with age and can be blown off with turbo back pressure.
The air mass meter ( AMM ) and automatic idle control ( AIC ) can also affect idle.
