I'm about 90% sure the combined CD/Equalizer was standard on a '92 turbo. If it wasn't the "nude" equalizer only was there. I disagree with the other cost estimates, though. I went to a junkyard one summer and got a radio/cassette unit, its mounting box, an equalizer and its box for about $80 out of the junkyard. Everything worked fine. (Imagine that!) The CD units are less than reliable, but anything 1992-1993 (+94 converts) will work for you.
I have the 1992 audio manual complete with wiring diagrams. E-mail me if you want me to scan them for you since I'm out of picture bandwidth/storage on this site.
My '92 is an S, so except for the weather band button, the head unit is exactly the same, and I bought a non-functional CD/equalizer unit for Wasyl to rebuild. Total estimated cost: $150 plus she needs new front speakers. (That's $95 for the rebuild/exchange and the rest for a cable, more on that later.)
Find someone with a parts car (there are currently at least three on the classifieds) that is willing to give you the radio, box, and connectors and at least two inches of regular wiring, and splice it in yourself. You might be inside the dash for a little while, but I think it's worth it. Hackjob radios are one of my pet peeves. Little itty bitty buttons and a detatchable face that falls off, great. With the stock system, the entire radio is detatchable- get a couple of spare storage bins and the would-be thieves can't even tell where the radio went. Plus it's not orange and looks like it belongs there because it does.
My only gripe with my intended upgrade (adding the CD/equalizer) is with Saab, who seems to think that anyone stupid enough to want to buy the twin-DIN cable that connects the existing 900 harness to the CD/equalizer box feels like parting with $62. Parts car, here we come!
