bearing terminology Posted by CMyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: www.fixmysaab.com has instructions...., Chaz, Sat, 18 Mar 2006 15:47:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
DDun, Chaz has offered some good suggestions to you but just to clarify, PINION bearings CAN NOT be replaced without complete disassembly of the transmission. By pulling out the inner drivers one at a time it is only possible to replace the differntial carrier bearing outer races and the axle bearings. (I think there is some confusion concerning terminology). So if your pinion bearings need to be replaced you'll need to do a complete teardown. Pinion bearings and axle bearings are the most common bearing problem with these transaxles and usually last about 130,000 to 180,000 miles. The progression of symptoms is first noise and then difficulty shifting into one or more forward gears (as the pinion shaft wobbles in the loose pinion bearings) and then implosion. Unless you have some experience with rebuilding transaxles you would do well to entrust this to a Saab tech. with C900 5 speed experience or a Saab tranny rebuilder (Eriksson Industries). Sorry, I know that this isn't what you want to hear but with your tranny out now is the best time to get it rebuilt, especially if it has symptoms or high mileage. Cheers.
