Last night there was a fire on the road I live on, and the Police turned everyone down this very narrow country lane to go around it. I was unfamiliar with the road, and wound up dropping off the paved portion once. I was only doing about 30mph, but the noises coming from my front end were a loud series of clunks. The car ran well the rest of the way home, but I noticed taking left curves was a bit strange in that it feels like the rear of the car is sliding out, and steering wheel suddenly goes to the left about 2 inches. This forces me to steer back to the right a bit, and then when the left curve is over, the steering wheel lurches right, and the tail end feels normal again.
Today I looked underneath, and nothing seems broken or hanging. I did jack the car up, and the wheel now has some vertical play, but no horizontal play. I had to get to work, and live in the far back 40 so to speak, so I set out driving. The passenger side front end rattles a bit over large bumps, and left curves act as stated above. For a moment I forgot the problem, and took a really sharp curve at about 60. Man, what a difference in cornering! Aside from having to lurch in and lurch out of curves, it corners really nice this way. I normally got slight tire squeel on that curve, but this morning, nothing.
ok ... I know I broke something, but no idea what. I also know I'm crazy, so no need to go there. I had something similar happen in a Honda, and the wheel flopped over on it's side. The control arm was broken. I lashed it together with my boot laces and limped home. Seems to me either the Saab's control arm is extra stout or not quite broken all the way. Any ideas?
