Myles, Rumbling on deceleration that is absent on acceleration, right? First grab the axle shaft and see if it has significant lateral play at the inner driver. You know that there is a "tripod" bearing in there. As the three bearings which make up the tripod wear one of them will start to lose its' needles (they are needle bearings) and then the assembly develops lateral slop which causes rumbling. Generally that rumbling is evident on acceleration. Check both axles, left and right. They can fool you as to which side is the culprit but the right (passenger) side is the best bet especially if this is a non turbo car. The manifold heat breaks down the lubricant in the inner driver. Look for a torn boot too. That's a pretty sure sign that what's inside is damaged or at least out of grease. If you chock the rear wheels, put the car in neutral and raise the suspect front wheel you can usually hear a bad wheel bearing with a stethoscope placed on the steering knuckle near the bearing while the wheel is rolled by hand. There is a ball bearing in which the inner driver rolls that is inside of the inner driver housing and at high mileage that bearing can seize-up or become very sloppy. What is the condition of your transaxle? How many miles? Final drive assemblies can make a growling or rumbling noise upon deceleration when the pinion bearings are shot. Make sure that your transaxle is full of 10w30 oil. If it's dry or way low you'll get noise (and damage of course). Good luck.
