What code(s) are stored for the CEL? Even after the light turns off (fault goes away) if yours is '89 or newer, you'll be able to pull codes out of the computer and see what turned the light on. All that aside, have you checked for continuity/resistance at the TPS? '89-'90 should be a basic continuity-when-closed setup whilst the '91- LH 2.4.2 cars have a potentiometer (variable resistance) instead of a switch. If just shaking the connector works, clean up the contacts, especially if the unit looks good on an ohmmeter. To test mine, I connected the meter across the two pins (2 and 3? I forget, whichever one changes) and turned the throttle very slowly. If you get any lumps, bumps, or jumps the TPS is probably bad.
Variable idle may also be caused by vacuum leaks or a faulty engine temperature sensor. The engine temperature sensor is another easy one- measure resistance across the pins and compare it to the chart/specs in the Bentley book.
