I appreciate the advice, guys. I am still not sure I'll have the time to take on the project. First I've got to build a garage/shop. I live in Alaska and summer is too busy with important stuff like salmon fishing and hunting moose for taking on a car project....
HOWEVER - in answer to "what caused the fire?" I think the coincidence is too great to overlook the fact that the fire occured within an hour after I'd added a couple capfuls of a product called Sea Foam which I'd purchased at NAPA. This product is especially good in marine engines, and it recommends applications in all type of engines. I followed the instructions. After reading several other blogs in reference to car fires - it may be that my catalytic converter is needing to be replaced. The product is flammable and may have collected in that area. The heat from beneath the car was so intense in caused the wire harness insulation to melt, then all h--- broke loose. A couple miles down the road and - OMG!!! I have used this product many years now, with never a problem. It frees up sticky valves and does not hurt engine seals. My trucks and an old Rabbit I once owned acted like a new rig after adding it to the fuel tank, oil, and crankcase.
NOTE: THERE IS A 88/89 900S RECALL which references the unprotected wire bundle in the vicinity of the rear seat bulkhead, where the front edge of the seat hinges to the bottom of the cabin. The "fix" is to encase the bundle inside a heavy PVC or spiral-wrap sheath. This is a trouble-prone area, especially if you often take advantage of the huge cargo area created by laying the rear seats flat like I do, er, did. (SNIFF) :(
A kind belly-dump operator tossed me his fire extinguisher from his rig, and it saved my car. :]
