interesting site on the car industry, Giving a thumbs up to the Saab product line;

http://www.autoextremist.com

Saab. We've had the opportunity to sample the latest from Saab recently, and even though it's difficult to envision a future for the brand within a downsized GM, there's no question the cars have merit. We drove the 9-3 Turbo 5-spd., a 9-3 Aero Sport Combi 6-spd. auto. and the 9-7X SUV with 5.3-liter V-8. Except for the quirky behavior of the HVAC at times (settings seem to change every time you started the cars) and the off-putting color/graphics of the instrumentation, we found both 9-3s to be pleasurable to drive. We clearly preferred the 9-3 Aero Sport Combi, however. This latest 5-door from Saab had the new 2.8-liter, 24-valve, High Output V-6 Turbo with 250HP - and we loved it. With excellent throttle response, decent mid-range punch and enough torque to satisfy most people in around-town driving, this engine transmission combination is stellar. And the Sport Combi combines that excellent power delivery with a sport-tuned suspension (featuring tasty 17" alloy wheels that fit the aero-themed bodywork perfectly) to give the car a pleasing, substantial feel that the 4-cylinder 9-3 lacks. As for the 9-7X SUV, let's just say it's amazing what suspension tuning can do to GM's aging TrailBlazer/Envoy platform. The 9-7X feels completely different (in a good way), and there are enough interior touches to differentiate it from its siblings. Is it as good as Chevy's TrailBlazer SS in terms of suspension tuning? No, but they're on completely different missions too. Should the 9-7X even exist? If Saab is to survive within the GM universe, no. What will happen to Saab? It's anyone's guess, but GM simply cannot support eight distinct brands within their solar system, no matter how hard they try to spin it. We would love to see Saab survive, if possible, but it will probably only survive under new ownership - or as an offshoot of Saturn in a future GM.
