consider putting a couple of the Chevron Techron or other fuel additive in two or three tanks of gas to make sure the injectors are good and clean. Air Filter? If you haven't done it do, even if it looks clean. Oil change? If you don't have good paperwork from the PO I'd suggest you do several oil changes at short duration, maybe 1-2 thousand miles each. Are you considering using Synthetic? I'm sold on Mobile-1, One million miles on about six cars and not one internal or bearing failure. Period.
Lastly, make sure your cooling system is tip top. A Head gasket ($300-600) job is almost always next after an overheat. Drain and flush, as much as you can, the radiator. I have backed the plastic drain plug all the way out and put a small screwdriver in the hole, had a radiator with chocolate pudding like crap in one, replaced that radiator! Your temp gauge should not normally ride above the half way. at speed on the freeway (not in the desert at 100 degrees...) it should read less than half and the fans should not come on. if they do your radiator is suspect. if you have not heard the fans come on you can test like this: park in the driveway, start the car, get a towel or blanket and cover the inlet between the headlights (just drape on the hood and down to the bumper), this will get the engine warmer faster and allow you to remove the towel when the engine either gets very hot or the fans come on. the fans should come own, remove the towel, the temp should go down, and the fans should go off, this is a normal cycle. also look for hoses that are bulged much larger than the hose clamps at their ends. this is bad, means the hose is expanding and you should replace. watch needing to add any fluid, water/antifreeze, oil, power steering, tranmission, battery if it's that type, even the washer fluid. any addition means it went somewhere and you need to investigate and understand what is going on. my brother *didn't* do that and (he kept adding a little water for a couple of weeks) had a hose that was starting to split, blew out on the freeway, overheated, and you can see the work we did in my members photos area... $650 with all new everything that we could think of, besides the resurfacing and all. we did go whole hog, don't want to be in there for anything for the next 100K miles or more...
