Just in case it's not the CV joints, here's another possibility...
On my former '89, the front toe was funny at full steering in either direction. The front tires would fight against each other & every couple feet one or the other would suddenly slide sideways on the pavement. You could feel the car shudder sideways, which doesn't feel the same as a bad CV joint.
Maybe the non-zero toe at large steering angles works at higher speeds, but when the steering is hard over at walking speed it feels funny.
